Fishing, Hunting, Deer & Turkey Licenses

Fishing

Iowa residents and nonresidents 16 years and older are required to have a valid fishing/habitat license while fishing. Exceptions: residents & non-residents under 16, resident military personnel on active duty, resident and nonresident landowners under 18. See regulations for other exceptions. Trout fee: see regulations. See regulations for residency requirements.

Hunting

Iowa residents 16 years to 64 years old, and nonresidents regardless of age, are required to have a valid hunting/habitat license on their person while hunting. Exceptions: military personnel who are Iowa residents – see regulations. See regulations for Iowa and Federal Migratory Waterfowl Stamps and fees. See regulations for residency requirements.

Furharvesters

All residents and nonresidents, regardless of age, must have a Furharvester License to trap or hunt furbearing animals. Residents 16 to 64 years old, and nonresidents regardless of age, must also have paid the Habitat Fee. A hunting license is not needed to hunt furbearers. See requirements for residency requirements.

Coyote and groundhog maybe hunted with either a Furharvester License or a Hunting License.

Deer and Turkey Hunters – Residents

Residents who hunt deer or wild turkey must have a valid hunting and habitat license on their person while hunting, if normally required to have them to hunt.

Landowner-Tenant Licenses

Iowa residents who are owners of agricultural land, or tenants that farm agricultural land, are eligible for reduced-fee deer and wild turkey hunting licenses, commonly called landowner/tenant licenses. Applicants must have registered with the Iowa DNR before they are eligible to purchase this license. Nonresident landowners and tenants are not eligible for these licenses. See regulations for requirements.

All resident licenses, and small game non-resident licenses, may be purchased from the county recorder in most counties or from any DNR vendor who sells licenses through the Electronic Licensing System in Iowa (ELSI), or from the DNR on-line.

Deer and Turkey Hunters – Non-residents

All non-residents, regardless of age, must have a valid nonresident deer or wild turkey license, in addition to a valid hunting and habitat license, on their person while hunting. Nonresident landowners and tenants are not eligible for landowner/tenant licenses for deer and wild turkey.
