P & R Areas - Nishna Bend Recreation Area

This 80 acre area contains over 30 acres of wetland created from past mining operations and is located southeast of Corley. Its acquisition was partially funded with grants from Duck Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. The ponds left from past mining operations contain bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and bullhead to delight any angler. The other features include camping, a camping cabin, hiking trails, a river access, an arboretum, a planting of tall grass and short grass prairie with many species of wildflowers, and a nature learning center. A campground opened in 2007 with four electrical sites. Since then ten more sites have been added.. The cost for the sites is $12 per night. A new shower house/restroom was opened in May of 2009. The main office of the Conservation Board and Roadside Management Department are also located here. The Board is developing this area for its water resources and wildlife value, and is the focus of the counties nature learning program.

Iowa's Threatened Wetlands

Concealed beneath the glimmering surface of our nation’s rivers and lakes is an unique variety of aquatic creatures, largely unseen to most of us. This remarkable freshwater diversity should be a source of great national pride. Instead, it is a source of growing concern. Given the fluid nature of water, protecting aquatic Biodiversity is no easy task. Human activities even miles upstream, may upset natures balance in another place. Protecting and restoring priority watersheds will take creativity, commitment, and the active participation of local communities. Please assist us in our efforts to protect this delicate environment for future generations of outdoor enthusiasts, and to preserve the magnificent flora and fauna protected within our park boundaries.

-Many species of waterfowl and shore birds nest in the park during the summer months.
-Wetland, upland prairie and woodland biomes are all present in the park.
-Several species of gamefish are abundant at this site.
