P & R Areas - Elk Horn Creek

The Elkhorn Creek Recreation Area is a multiple use area, and is the ideal setting for a family on an outing, or for a person looking for solitude. With it's groomed trails and unique wildlife, the adventures are never ending. The upper picnic area contains what is believed to be the original site of the pioneer village of Elk Horn. Many building foundation blocks remain to mark the site. Elk Horn Creek Recreation Area is a bow Hunting only site. No firearms are permitted with park boundaries.

Onsite features include: 
-7 electrical sites with full electrical hookup, grass pads.
-Tent camping
-Picnic sites with grills, rural water and sanitary facilities, (pit and flush toilets). The sanitary facilities in the camping area are ADA accessible.
-One picnic shelter.
-Hiking trails.
-Two areas with playground equipment

Camping rates:
-$12.00 for electric sites
-$10.00 for non-electric/tent sites

Opening and closing dates:
-Elk Horn Creek opens for camping on April 1st and closes mid-October.

The Lyle and Wava Petersen Nature Preserve

The Lyle and Wava Petersen Nature Preserve consists of a 40 acre Oak and meadow tract which borders the Elk Horn Creek Recreation Area. Donated to the Conservation Board in 1995, this area has been designated a nature preserve, no firearms are allowed, bow hunting only. Prairie grasses and wildflowers have been planted and a hiking trail has been mowed through the area. Many types of birds and animals can be found in this area, hiking is a popular pastime here.
